Doylestown Borough Drought Update - March 2025
Doylestown Borough operates a groundwater-based water system, which includes five wells that supply water to our distribution network and two standpipes. Additionally, we have interconnections with the Doylestown Township Municipal Authority, allowing us to receive a limited supply of water from them during emergencies, such as significant fires or major water main breaks.
Our reliance on groundwater makes us particularly vulnerable to the ongoing drought that has persisted over the past year. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Bucks County is experiencing its driest start to the year in 131 years as of early 2025. Consequently, the Doylestown Borough Water Department has implemented mandatory drought restrictions for all customers using our water system.
To assess drought conditions and enforce these restrictions, the Water Department utilizes various monitoring tools. We track federal and state databases for information on:
Historical rainfall
Stream flow
Groundwater levels
In addition, our own water system data plays a vital role. Our operators conduct daily inspections of the wells, collecting data every day of the year. During these checks, we record parameters such as:
The water level in each well
The duration of operation over a 24-hour period
The volume of water being pumped
This comprehensive data collection enables us to evaluate the health of our wells, the groundwater supply, and the overall integrity of the system. It is this information that informs our decisions regarding drought monitoring and the enforcement of restrictions.
